Coming October 15, 2026

Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664) is considered, along with Diego Velázquez and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, one of the most important Spanish painters of the 17th century. Initially regarded as a Caravaggist influenced by monastic asceticism, he was gradually recognized in the 20th century as a prodigious colorist and celebrated for his highly personal style, which combines the simplification of forms with striking naturalism.

This exhibition brings together paintings from the major religious commissions in Andalusia that established Zurbarán's reputation; his career unfolded primarily in Seville and Madrid. It also features portraits and still lifes, including some by his son, Juan de Zurbarán. A selection of works from the 19th and early 20th centuries (Manet, Picasso, Gris) highlights Zurbarán's crucial role for the avant-garde movements in France. This collection invites readers to discover or rediscover his paintings, to better understand them, and to be dazzled by the boldness and visual power of his compositions.
