Earrings with facing birds

Gold, travail au repoussé

Acq. In 1900 OA 5007
This gold earring features two small peacocks standing face to face on either side of a stylised central element, and small hollow beads welded to the rim. The style is entirely consistent with Late Antique jewellery, making accurate dating rather difficult: this piece may have been made during the Byzantine period or at the very beginning of the Islamic period.
