Between the arms of the Louvre Palace, three nymphs in full bloom offer themselves to the contemplation of the walkers of the Carrousel garden. Most people are probably unaware of the eventful history of this work by Aristide Maillol (1861-1944).
In 1937, at the International Exhibition in Paris, the artist, then at the peak of his career, was given three rooms in the Exhibition of the Masters of Independent Art. At the age of seventy-five, he decided to mark the event with his most ambitious work: The Three Nymphs. This variation on the ancient theme of the Three Graces would contribute to his consecration as "the greatest living French sculptor".
