To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death in 2020, the Louvre Museum has honoured his memory by restoring one of his most beautiful early Madonnas, "La Belle Jardinière", so called since the 18th century because of the Virgin's modest dress and her setting in a bucolic landscape.
The Solo devoted to the work is the first publication on the painting after this intervention, which revealed its clear and brilliant palette and the full depth of space.
Several preparatory drawings and new laboratory examinations provide a better understanding of the genesis of the work, the master's intentions and his hesitations.
