Catalogue d'exposition Jacques-Louis David

Written in French

This book offers an immersive look at the turbulent years of the Revolution, in which David was deeply involved. It invites readers to discover the quest for freedom of a painter who was also a citizen and a man of action, whose work cannot be separated from his political convictions. From the end of the Ancien Régime to the Restoration, David constantly reinvented himself with determination, using his brush to awaken the conscience of his contemporaries. Marat Assassinated, The Sabines, and The Coronation are the milestones of this journey, paintings that strike the viewer with their power, proof of the exceptional mastery David brought to his art.

DAVID

October 15, 2025 - January 26, 2026

A leading figure in the history of art, Jacques-Louis David is considered the "father of the French school" and the "regenerator of painting". The Death of Marat, Bonaparte Crossing the Grand Saint Bernard, The Coronation of Napoleon... These canvases tell the whole story of the Revolution and the Empire.

To mark the bicentennial of his passing, the Musée du Louvre is presenting an exceptionally rich exhibition that showcases the expressive power of a body of work which, beneath its apparent rigour, harbours an unexpected intensity.

The exhibition, which charts the career of an artist who lived through six political regimes, features over a hundred loans, including a fragment of The Jeu de Paume Oath (on loan from the Louvre to the Palace of Versailles) and the original version of The Death of Marat (Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium).
