Engraving Underground Resistance and Urban Renewal - Cyprien Gaillard 2015
Cyprien Gaillard's work evokes the vestiges of modern architecture about to be invaded by nature, just as Hubert Robert imagined the ruined Louvre in 1796. The work is a montage of prints held in the Louvre: La Représentation des machines qui ont servi à élever les deux pierres qui couvrent le fronton de la principale entrée du Louvre (Leclerc, 1677), Le Feu d'artifice des fêtes données au roi et à la reine par la ville de Paris le 21 janvier 1761 à l'occasion de la naissance du Dauphin (Moreau le jeune, 1783) and La Forêt vierge du Brésil (Fortier, 1822). Here, Gaillard combines the collection in which his work is inserted with the place, the events that animate it and nature. Symmetry of line and lush atmosphere rub shoulders with elements of sudden violence, jubilation and crowd idiosyncrasy. The title evokes both techno music and urban renewal. U and R are also the city of Ur and a German prefix referring to an original time.
