Susa, one of the oldest known cities, was founded around 4,000 B.C. in the beautiful plain of present-day Khuzistan in Iran.
Starting in 1897, the city was explored by a French expedition that found masterpieces of Mesopotamian art brought there as war booty, as well as traces of the Elamite civilization.
Indeed, Susa was surounded by Elam, whose territory included the plain fed by the Kerkha and the Karun rivers, as well as the plateau which the Persians named Fars.
At the beginning of the second millennium, the inhabitants of Susa prospered thanks to trade with Mesopotamia. They wore gold, and especially silver, jewellery. Discovered inside their tombs were decorations to be worn on the head and over women's chests, as well as earrings and simply shaped rings that nonetheless show great craftsmanship.
