Faunes is a series of three scarves upon which photographs of objects from the 18th century have been printed.Art objects fascinate people with the richness and complexity of their designs. However, behind every object there is a perception of a desire to appear natural. A tension is created between the natural and the artificial through order and disorder, beauty and ugliness, the useful and the useless. At times, the decorative aspects overwhelm the object to the point that it forgets its function.
Five items have been selected from the collections of the Louvre. Their photographs have been digitally reworked through a set of collages and fragmentation to create new patterns. Thanks to this new approach, this range of scarves offers a contemporary perspective on the 18th century.
The scarves were printed and made in Lyon (France), inspired by "L'Evanouissement d'Armide" [The Fainting of Armide] (hanging, 1767, Gobelins Manufactory), "Prince électeur Ottheinrich von des Pflaz" [Prince Elector Ottheinrich von des Pflaz] (marble statue attributed to Dietrich Schro), a large round dish decorated in the centre with coats of arms (first half of the eighteenth century, Rouen), "La Mélancolie" [Melancholia] (statue by Etienne Maurice Falconet, 1774, Royal Manufactory of Sèvres), bipod assembly (1713, château de Bercy).
