In 1822, Delacroix made his first entry into the artistic world by exhibiting "Dante and Virgil in the Underworld", a vigorous work, with an ambitious composition and very elaborate colors. Two years later, he painted "The Massacre of Scio" (representing the massacres perpetrated in Chios in April 1822 by the Ottomans during the Greek War of Independence), a powerful and committed work, which the State purchased, indifferently. to criticism. These two paintings concretize the controversy between romanticism and classicism, between drawing and color, which will follow the painter throughout his life.
During the Universal Exhibition of 1855, Delacroix presented around forty paintings with which he confirmed his talent.
This magnificent work offers us the opportunity to admire Delacroix's most beautiful masterpieces, but also to discover his career, his itinerary and the techniques he used. Delacroix had an influence on many painters, such as Vincent Van Gogh. His paintings demonstrate a great mastery of color.
