Susa is one of the oldest known cities, founded around 4000 B.C. in the beautiful plain of present-day Khuzestan, at the foot of the Iranian Plateau. The city has been explored since 1897 by a French expedition that discovered both masterpieces of Mesopotamian art, brought there as spoils of war, and evidence of Elamite civilization.
Indeed, Susa was part of the land of Elam, which included both the plains irrigated by the Kerkha and Karun rivers and the plateau that the Persians named Fars.
At the beginning of the 2nd millennium, its inhabitants had grown wealthy through trade with Mesopotamia and wore gold and, above all, silver jewelry, discovered in their tombs: headdresses and breastplates for women; earrings and rings of simple forms yet revealing great craftsmanship.
