The work of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), marked by strong political commitment, ranges from history painting to portraiture, reflecting the upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire. David, who held political office during the Revolution, was also an influential artist, training a new generation of painters, including Ingres. This book accompanies the exceptional retrospective exhibition, the first since 1989, organized by the Louvre Museum on the bicentennial of David's death. It offers a new interpretation of his artistic and political career, exploring in particular his revolutionary commitment and his confrontation with the new artistic generation during his exile in Brussels, and highlighting David's lasting legacy in art history.
