WRITTEN IN FRENCH
In 1822, Delacroix made his first entry into the artistic world by exhibiting "Dante and Virgil in the Underworld", a vigorous work, with an ambitious composition and very elaborate colors. Two years later, he painted "The Massacre of Scio" (representing the massacres perpetrated in Chios in April 1822 by the Ottomans during the Greek War of Independence), a powerful and committed work, which the State purchased, indifferently. to criticism. These two paintings concretize the controversy between romanticism and classicism, between drawing and color, which will follow the painter throughout his life.
During the Universal Exhibition of 1855, Delacroix presented around forty paintings with which he confirmed his talent.
