A study devoted to the statues of Charles V the Wise, King of France from 1364 to 1380, and his wife Queen Jeanne. The origins of these two sculptures, masterpieces of medieval statuary, are poorly documented. The investigation sheds light on the context of their conception, identification problems, preservation and significance.
Pierre-Yves Le Pogam undertakes a veritable investigation to re-establish the truth about these works, which have remained poorly documented until today. Drawing on scientific studies carried out at the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF), which reveal what the eye can no longer see, and on what we know today about this royal couple and their era, he succeeds in reconstructing the history of these masterpieces of medieval sculpture and restoring their place and meaning.
