Pearls were seen as one of the great riches of America. Antonio Tempesta shows us the fishing: the men are busy in the water, diving from dug-out canoes and bringing the fruit of their harvest to the shore: pearl oysters opened before our eyes and all sorts of other shells destined for collectors. This tropical seascape seems to have been inspired by the exceptional lapis lazuli plaque that the painter has chosen as a support.
