The Venus de Milo is without doubt the most famous ancient Greek statue in the world.
But the most famous works are sometimes the least known.
Like the Mona Lisa and the Victory of Samothrace, the Venus remains a mystery to the millions of visitors who flock to the Louvre every year.
Despite numerous analyses and the meticulous restoration carried out in 2010, the questions posed by Salomon Reinach in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1890 are still relevant today: when and by whom was the Venus sculpted? What attitude and attributes did the unknown sculptor give it?
In the light of the latest scientific research, it is time to understand why this statue is rightly considered a genuine masterpiece of art history and how it has become, over the years, a world icon whose "biography" is like a great adventure novel.
