The representation of architecture in the figurative arts (painting, fresco, drawing, relief, marquetry) remains a subject largely neglected by art historians. The reflection to which Sabine Frommel invites us with this series of lectures, accompanied by this publication edited by Hazan in the collection La Chaire du Louvre, ranges from the metaphorical dimension of monuments, ruins and building sites to the ways and styles with which architecture and space are evoked and continually rethought. From this horizon of almost four centuries, continuities, mutations and renewals emerge, revealing fertile influences between artists and osmosis between different genres. This captivating exploration thus offers a singular access to the museum's works and enriches our view of major but also lesser known productions of the Italian Renaissance.
