The book immerses us in the middle of 19th century art, and in particular that of collectors. Horace His de la Salle appears as an important and singular figure; his erudition and great liberality will mark and influence this whole period. His de la Salle stands out as a lover of the arts as well as a friend of the arts. Rembrandt, Watteau, Géricault, Poussin..., he has built up an exceptionally rare collection, mainly of drawings but also of sculptures and works of art.
Devoured by an altruistic passion, he wanted to pass on his taste for the collection. Thus, his works have never ceased to be made available to others. He also contributed greatly to the development of museum collections and even inaugurated the first amateur legacies in some institutions, becoming one of the major donors to the main drawing firms in Paris, such as the Louvre and the École des beaux-arts, but also to the first provincial museums, Dijon, Lyon and Alençon.
