In 1916, the engineer Georges Marteau, partner and then co-director of the firm Grimaud, bequeathed his collection to the national museums. This one is at the crossroads of three worlds: playing cards, Japan and the art of Persian books. Representative of their owner's unique itinerary, emblematic of the spirit of an era that was enthusiastic about the arts of the East, the three parts of this collection, now dispersed among various French institutions, are brought together in this book, which presents a selection of works from the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Louvre Museum, the Musée Guimet and the Musée des Arts décoratifs.
Exhibition at the musée du Louvre from 26 June 2019 to 6 January 2020.
